Lateral Domains

Lateral Domains

An organization may have multiple entities functioning separately. For example, let us say that ACME is the parent company under which there are multiple branches catering to different services. The domain name for the parent website would be acme.com, and the branch organizations would be lateral domains of acme such as acmefinance.com, acmesocial.com, etc.

In Securin, the ASM platform is designed to identify all lateral domains of an organization and list them. The Account Manager can verify these domains and add them to the organization's assets manually.

Only the Account Manager will be able to view the Unverified Assets and Archived tabs. This feature is available only for the Platinum Customer accounts.

When an account is created, all known domains are added to the account and the ASM platform will start looking for lateral domains related to themThe initial scan is conducted, and the ASM platform automatically lists the lateral domains associated with the seed domain under the Unverified Assets tab in the Home Dashboard (Account Screen).

                                                               Unverified Assets Tab

This scan happens once every 90 days where the platform looks for lateral domains. New domains and lateral domains are then added to the list.

In the Unverified Assets page, you can find the following details:

  1. Domain Name: The name of the lateral domain as discovered
  1. Org Name: The organization it is associated with
  1. SeedThe domain using which the lateral domain was discovered
  1. Confidence score: The confidence score is a rating assigned to the lateral domain based on the assumption that it is associated with the seed domain.
  1. Workspace: This contains the list of workspaces from which you need to associate the domain with.
  1. Actions: The actions you can perform on the tab are shown here.

Criteria for the Confidence Score:
If a third-party entity was used to identify the lateral domain, it would be given a confidence score of 80%.

If the domain matches with any number of the 10 keys in the "WhoIs" records, the score will be calculated accordingly.

The Account Manager will then have to verify these domains and add them to the relevant workspace.

Lateral Domain Details

The details of each lateral domain can be found on clicking the domain name. These are populated from the "WhoIs" database.
